What is the CMT Course

The Certified Medication Technician (CMT) Course at Excellis Incorporated is a comprehensive program designed to equip individuals with the skills and knowledge necessary for proficiently administering medications in various healthcare settings.

The course covers essential topics such as medication administration techniques, proper storage practices, accurate documentation, and effective communication with fellow healthcare professionals. Participants will also gain insights into different types of medications, their physiological effects, and learn to identify and manage common side effects and adverse reactions.

The ultimate goal of the CMT Course is to prepare individuals to serve as Certified Medication Technicians, responsible for administering medications under the supervision of a licensed nurse in long-term care facilities, hospitals, or other healthcare settings. Upon successful completion of the course and passing a certification exam, individuals will be eligible to embark on a fulfilling career in healthcare.

How long is the CMT course

The CMT Course comprises a minimum of 20 classroom hours of instruction, facilitated under the direct supervision of experienced instructors. The curriculum covers a range of areas, including a basic review of body systems and the effects of medications on each system, medical terminology, infection control, and medication classifications. At Excellis Incorporated, we offer the CMT course as a three-day program typically held on Mondays through Wednesdays. Successful completion of a final written examination is required before individuals are issued a certificate of completion and registered with the Maryland Board of Nursing (MBON).

What is the Renewal Process?

For individuals who have obtained their CMT certification through Excellis Incorporated, the renewal process is as follows:

  1. The CMT must renew the certificate every two years from the date of the first renewal.
  2. Certification will expire on the 28th day of the individual’s birth month.
  3. The Board will send the medication technician a renewal form 60 to 90 days before the expiration date. If the MT does not receive a renewal application, it is the MT’s responsibility to contact the Board and request one.
  4. The medication technician must complete a Board-approved Clinical Update specific to their practice setting within 90 days prior to the certificate expiring.
  5. There is a thirty (30) day grace period beyond the expiration date for renewal. During this time, the individual has an additional 30 days to obtain the Clinical Update.
  6. As of October 1, 2007, the CMT must have 100 hours of practice as a CMT in the two (2) years immediately preceding the renewal.
  7. The Registered Nurse approved to teach the medication technician training program must submit the MT’s Clinical Update verification electronically.
  8. The individual completes the renewal form, pays the fee ($30.00), and returns it to the Board.
  9. The Board electronically matches the Clinical Update verification and the medication technician renewal form.

Failure to obtain the Clinical Update before the expiration of the grace period will require the CMT to repeat the 20-hour CMT Training program. At Excellis Incorporated, we are committed to guiding our students through a seamless renewal process, ensuring that they stay current and proficient in their practice.
